Blocking v. Ignoring?

Hello !Friendica Support

  1. What exactly is the difference between Blocking and Ignoring in Friendica?
  2. How is this handled elsewhere in the Fediverse?

@Andy H3 I think ignoring is not seeing content of the ignored account from your point of view, blocking is not seeing content both ways.

Documentation is here: https://github.com/friendica/friendica/blob/develop/doc/FAQ.md#how-do-blocked-ignored-archived-and-hidden-contacts-behave

Sadly from my experience there is no effective blocking available in friendica. Posts or comments from blocked persons can still end up in your timeline which I find irritating. "However, their conversations with your friends will still be visible in your stream." I find that aspect very unexpected.

I wish there was a more usable form of documentation, but sadly https://github.com/friendica/friendica/pull/11702 is not progressing due to time constrains of the contributor.

So looking at the FAQ, I'm experiencing some irregularities.

[Ignored] you will still see this person's comments to posts made by your friends.

👆 That's exactly what I was hoping for. But it turns out the person (on a Mastodon server) I placed on ignore doesn't show up in my contact's conversations. I see someone replying to the "Ignored" person's reply, as a "unknown parent" post. Double checking on the Mastodon server I can see the "Ignored" person's reply, but I am now actively prevented from even importing their post.

So is this now by design or just another bug?

Not entirely sure. You could file an issue with as much info as possible. Include screenshots and post URLs of the original posts so the situation can be assessed and, if friendica is misbehaving, hopefully fixed.
